Discover the Potential of Latvia's Borderland: Apply for the International Workshop "Commons Under Constraint"
Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences New Building School invites students of architecture, construction, urban planning, arts, design, and anthropology to apply for a unique international design-build workshop (Erasmus+ BIP) titled "Commons Under Constraint. Adaptive Reuse and Community Co-production in Borderland Territories." This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and contribute to local community development by working in Latvia's eastern borderland.
The workshop will take place from May 10 to May 16, 2026, in Indra, Krāslava region—a small settlement right at the edge of the European Union.
Reactivating Overlooked Spaces
The Indra area, located in the Latgale region, stands out with its layered identity, diverse cultural influences, and unique timber architectural heritage. Although the territory is affected by depopulation and shifting geopolitical realities, it still holds strong local knowledge and a rich cultural landscape.
The workshop aims to explore how architecture and design can meaningfully engage in conditions of constraint. Participants will work along a local borderland hiking route, seeking ways to reactivate overlooked spaces through small-scale, thoughtful interventions, support local life, and bring new energy into the territory. The process will combine site analysis, idea development, and hands-on construction using available and reclaimed materials.
Program and Process
The workshop is structured in two phases to ensure comprehensive preparation and intensive practical work. The pre-program consists of online sessions on May 5 and May 9 via MS Teams, which include seminars on the Latvian borderland context, adaptive reuse, low-impact construction, and the ethical principles of community engagement.
The on-site workshop in Indra will take place from May 10 to May 16. The practical program includes site exploration, material mapping, meetings with local inhabitants, conceptual design development, and the construction process itself. The week will conclude with a public presentation and a shared opening of the created interventions. The on-site work will proceed in close collaboration with the local community, and the construction will primarily use timber and simple, sustainable methods that allow the objects to be adapted, repaired, or reused in the future.
Team and Practicalities
The workshop will be led by experienced architects from NOMAD architects—Marta Ventere and Marija Katrīna Dambe. Their professional work and research focus on adaptive reuse, community-led design, and the role of architecture in peripheral and borderland territories.
Participants will stay together in the Indra Local Cultural Centre, which offers a simple and shared living setup with all necessary sanitary facilities and a fully equipped kitchen, fostering informal exchange and collaboration. Meals will be organized with a focus on local context and everyday practices, in collaboration with a nearby biological farmstead offering fresh, locally sourced food.
For international participants, the workshop is organized as an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). The Erasmus+ individual support is intended to cover travel, accommodation, and daily expenses during the program.

Darbnīcas mērķis ir pētīt, kā arhitektūra un dizains var jēgpilni darboties ierobežotu resursu apstākļos. Dalībnieki strādās gar vietējo pierobežas pārgājienu taku, meklējot veidus, kā ar neliela mēroga, pārdomātām intervencēm reaktivizēt aizmirstas telpas, atbalstīt vietējo dzīvi un ienest teritorijā jaunu enerģiju. Process apvienos vietas analīzi, ideju attīstīšanu un praktisku būvniecību, izmantojot pieejamos un otrreiz pārstrādājamos materiālus.
Programma un norise
Darbnīca ir strukturēta divos posmos, nodrošinot vispusīgu sagatavošanos un intensīvu praktisko darbu. Priekšprogramma ietver tiešsaistes sesijas 5. un 9. maijā (MS Teams platformā), kurās dalībnieki piedalīsies semināros par Latvijas pierobežas kontekstu, adaptīvo pārizmantošanu, mazslogotu celtniecību un kopienas iesaistes ētiskajiem principiem.
Klātienes darbnīca Indrā norisināsies no 10. līdz 16. maijam. Praktiskā programma ietver vietas izpēti, materiālu apzināšanu, tikšanos ar vietējiem iedzīvotājiem, konceptuālā dizaina izstrādi un pašu celtniecības procesu. Nedēļa noslēgsies ar publisku prezentāciju un kopīgu izveidoto objektu atklāšanu. Darbs klātienē noritēs ciešā sadarbībā ar vietējo kopienu, un celtniecībā galvenokārt tiks izmantots koks un vienkāršas, ilgtspējīgas metodes, kas ļauj objektus nākotnē pielāgot, labot vai izmantot atkārtoti.

Darbnīcu vadīs pieredzējušas arhitektes no NOMAD architects – Marta Ventere un Marija Katrīna Dambe. Viņu profesionālā darbība un pētniecība koncentrējas uz adaptīvo pārizmantošanu, kopienas virzītu dizainu un arhitektūras lomu perifērās un pierobežas teritorijās.
Dalībniekiem tiks nodrošināta kopīga nakšņošana Indras kultūras centrā, kur būs pieejamas visas nepieciešamās sanitārās ērtības un pilnībā aprīkota virtuve, veicinot neformālu informācijas apmaiņu un sadarbību. Ēdināšana tiks organizēta, akcentējot vietējo kontekstu un ikdienas prakses, sadarbībā ar vietējo bioloģisko saimniecību, kas piedāvās svaigus, vietējas izcelsmes produktus.
Starptautiskajiem dalībniekiem darbnīca tiek organizēta kā Erasmus+ kombinētā intensīvā programma (BIP). Erasmus+ individuālais atbalsts ir paredzēts ceļa, izmitināšanas un ikdienas izdevumu segšanai programmas laikā.
